Abstract

This white paper traces the full lifecycle of operations tracking systems in manufacturing environments, beginning with early client-server architectures, transitioning to cloud-based systems, and ultimately returning to hybrid on-premises models. While cloud computing initially promised reduced IT overhead and improved accessibility, real-world deployments revealed critical vulnerabilities, including internet reliability issues, security risks, latency, and operational disruptions caused by centralized failures.

In response, the paper presents a modern hybrid approach centered on WIPtracker, an industrial IoT appliance that enables real-time operations tracking within each plant while maintaining integration with cloud-based ERP and AI systems. This architecture delivers high reliability, fast response times, and operational continuity even during internet outages, while still leveraging cloud-based intelligence for enterprise-wide coordination and decision support.
