Role of Orders in ISOM systems

Orders are an important aspect of ISOM systems used by make-to-order manufacturers. They are used to control the flow of jobs and materials through manufacturing plants and distribution warehouses.

Typical orders include:

Customer Orders for products to be delivered
Purchase Orders for materials to be purchased from suppliers. Also used for receiving materials
Manufacturing Orders, sometimes also referred to as Work Orders, for making intermediate materials and finished products
Picking Orders to pick products for movement to the production floor for a specific job or for shipment to customers
Packing Orders to pack products ready for or shipment to customers, such as on pallets and to apply appropriate labels
Shipping Orders to ship a set of products to customers

These orders may come be directly entered into an ISOM system, imported from ERP and CRM systems, or generated by intelligent agents, in response to incoming customer orders or shortages of raw and intermediate materials needed to make products.

These orders typically serve as orders for people to carry out tasks but they my also serve as inputs to automatic process lines and equipment.
